Film 6: Scene from THE BIRDS

  1. • What camera did you use? Why? We used the Canon 5D Mk III because we had to film right when I got back from Thanksgiving break, so we weren’t able to check anything out prior to filming. I think it ended up working in our favor though. It was light and fast which helped speed things up since we filmed at night.
    • What lights did you use? Why? Since we couldn’t check anything out we just relied on the practical lights in the stairwell. We used cell phone lights for fill lights and eye lights though and I think it worked well because no one even knew. It was subtle, but it worked.
    • What did you learn technically? I learned that the elements on the lens will fog when you go from extreme cold outside and into an apartment. I almost tired to wipe the fog off, but decided to leave it and when I went back outside the fog disappeared. That was a relief. I learned when we watched it to be more mindful of the 180 rule and to be more aware of that on set – I need to work on that.
    • What did you do well and what things can you improve on? I really liked how subtle I was able to move the camera during this shoot. It was on a tripod but I didn’t lock it down, I adjusted frame when my actors where moving. It was really subtle and I think that worked well. I also think the last shot from below the balcony worked great. I liked the subtle tilt down and the compositions. I think that I could improve on being more aware of the 180 rule. I think that I can improve on using lights so I was bummed I couldn’t use any for this shoot. I really believe that light is transformative and more than extremely important in story telling.
    • What was it like to watch this with an audience? Was your work in focus? Did the director use your favorite takes? Why or why not? I liked the takes that Josh used. I actually wasn’t as nervous in sharing this with the class as previous assignments. I think for the most part the class understood what I had done to help convey the messages of this film. My work was in focus throughout nearly the whole piece which was really hard considering my focal plane was about 1 inch. We were open at 2.8 the whole time and I had to do a lot of focus marks and pulls and I think that for the most part I was in focus.
