We used the Black Magic Cinema Camera. I wanted something that would be light enough to maneuver well without the need for anything bigger than the HDSLR shoulder rig, but also with the dynamic range to capture night scenes well enough.

We used Josh’s light kit for our indoor scenes. They were great for this scene because they are good at filling a room with soft fill light, which was what we needed. We also used a couple of practicals that I own because there are some that can be seen in the original clip. For outside, we just used phone flashlights because Josh thought we wouldn’t be able to use bigger lights outside.

I learned a lot about still camera moves, as well as about choosing lenses on a sensor with a huge crop factor. I think our lens choice tended to be pretty good (we’d usually go for one to two lenses wider than what we thought the original scene was). Camera moves were alright as long as I was using the shoulder rig, but obviously there were a couple of shots where the camera moves turned out very poorly.

I think we did well on lens choice, as well as on lighting the indoor scenes. Most of our camera moves (since almost the entire scene was handheld) were good as well. The worst elements were probably the lighting in our outdoor scenes, which I guess I could have been more prepared for, and the opening camera move where there is a walk towards the exterior of the house. I could definitely have spent more time trying to get a better take of that scene.

I felt good about watching the beginning of this with an audience, but then the rest I was very self-conscious of because of how poorly lit it was. Afterwards, Jeff spent a lot of time talking about how bad the opening camera move was, which was fair I suppose. I feel like there might have been better takes of that move, though, so I’m not really sure what happened there. Other than that, I was happy with the takes the director chose.
